Diving Deep into the Doshas

Learning about the doshas has truly helped me understand and love my body better. Diving deeper into the different body types and how we can easily slip out of balance depending on our unique body makeup has brought clarity and appreciation for all my body does.


Doshas are part of the Ayurvedic medicine system, whose primary goal is to establish a natural homeostasis in the body in order to prevent disease from forming. Finding your unique balance for your body. In this article we will explain the doshas and provide you with insights into finding harmony for your specific body composition. 


The Three Doshas


The three doshas, referred to as the Tridoshas, are Vata, Pitta and Kapha. In Sanskrit “tri” means ”three” and ”Doshas” means “that which can go out of balance.” That is key in understanding the concept of the Doshas. The doshas point to traits that your unique body holds, but most importantly it shows the ways your body can easily slip out of order and balance.


Each Dosha is expressed by a dominant element: 


Vata is symbolized by air

Pitta is symbolized by fire

Kapha is symbolized by earth


A combination of all three of these energies are needed in our system - Vata controls movement, Pitta regulates metabolism, and Kapha maintains structure. This maintains homeostasis in the human body. Their balanced combination constitutes good health. 


Each individual is composed of a unique combination of elements, with some elements in higher quantities than others. The balance of the Doshas in each individual varies. Most people are dominant in one or two Doshas. By learning and recognizing our unique mind-body constitution, we can make decisions about diet and how we live that promote health.
